Self-Stimming

I know, it sounds kinda dirty: self-stimming. But it's not, it's something that people with autism do. I found an article on it here, I'd encourage you to give it a read.

Here's a short video that talks about it. It's referencing this behavior in children, but it's applicable to adults, too.

  1. There's a lot more stimming behaviors that could be added. My son and I were both rockers (cue guitar riff) when we were younger, our stims have changed to less noticeable ones as we've grown older. I pull a lock of my hair (the same lock, every time) or will clench my hands. The latter can get almost destructive so I either have to keep my nails short or objects in my pocket to keep my nails from digging into my skin. Anyways, I'm definitely of the mindset that self stimming is a behavior to just let be as it always seems to help relax me down if I'm going into overload.

  2. I've only been aware of when I rub my fingers together or when I rub my fingers on another body part, like my arm. This is all so new to me, I wonder if years back I was doing other stimming behaviors that I just wasn't aware of.
